JAA23 OPEN STUDIO @NIROX 14/12
14 December - 15 December

NIROX is situated in the cradle of the human kind in Gauteng. This is a historic location. NIROX, a vast farm is home to the Kromdraai Impact Hub and site of many great arts, sculpture and jazz events. On Thursday 14th December 2023. NIROX hosts the Jazz Against Apartheid Open Studio. We look forward to a wonderful day of workshops and evening of performances.
Musical veterans and musical freedom fighters that fought the struggle abroad whilst providing a breakthrough for jazz in Europe, now stand at the centre of the most profound cross-fertilisation to emerge from the cradle of human kind in the last 350 000 years!
Jazz musicians in Europe, the likes of Claude Deppa (tp), Allen Jacobson (tb), Tobias Delius (ts), Daniel Guggenheim (ts), John Edwards (b), Makaya Ntshoko (dr), Thomas Dyani (perc) Christopher Dell (vib) Christian Lillinger (dr) brought a new jazz expression to Europe, directlly through their collaborations with South African musicians and in particular the compositions of Johnny Dyani.
This group of iconic performers have a deep freedom of expression. It is envisaged that their very experience, legacy, desire for change and dream for a better future for all may provide the breakthrough for the future generations of South African musicians and future art professionals.
The musical skills transfer and cultural exchange is built on the compositions of Johnny Dyani and is an arrow into the rich cultural heritage of South Africans in exile. Through this work we may experience:
1.) A vocal conception of bass playing.
2.) Music as an oral tradition.
3.) Folk music.
4.) Music with a message.
5.) Multiculturality.
JAA23 OPEN STUDIO @NIROX 14/12 promises to be an international co-operation with significant outreach including music tuition, dialogue sessions and business seminars and on-the-job training, mentorship and facilitation. It is a multi-purpose event serving as a collaborative platform for amateur musicians, an incubation program for youth performers as well as a bridge between young South Africans and international professionals. We welcome audiences, groups or individuals to not miss this opportunity of interacting with these world class performers.
